But it was not until the 1870s that he felt compelled to dedicate his life and intellect wholly to this affair. Before and while writing Anna Karenina Tolstoy increasingly turned his attention to religion as the deepest expression of man’s purpose. In 1873 he wrote to the poet Fet that although he found religion illogical, ‘there is yet something in it’. Tolstoy’s journey to religious acceptance was deeply marked by his intellectual struggle against this illogicality, for he found difficulty in trusting in something that ran counter to his reason.

The period following the completion of this great novel was one of intense meditation and spiritual conflict, with some solace found in a religious retreat made to Kaluga, and a reading of Pascal’s Pensées. Between 1877 and 1878 Tolstoy wrote two articles in which he presents the arguments of faith, ‘A Debate on Faith in the Kremlin’, and ‘The Interlocutors’. And in 1879 he wrote his compelling biography of the soul, A Confession, which certainly ranks amongst the finest biographies of its sort.

Our genuine, sincere concern was over how to gain as much money and fame as possible. And the only thing we knew how to do in order to achieve this aim was to write books and journals. This is what we did. But in order for us to pursue this utterly useless task and have the assurance that we were very important people we needed an argument that would justify what we were doing. And so we devised the following; everything that exists is rational and all that exists evolves. And it evolves through enlightenment.
